Book 1 …to the market
As Prem set out, he soon found himself behind a farmer leading a donkey to sell at the market. The farmer's son was happily perched on top of the donkey. BUt as they passed two farmers, they heard one say to the other, "Look at that inconsiderate boy. He should let his father ride the donkey."
Feeling ashamed, the boy jumped off the donkey and helped his father to mount it. After Traveling this way for a while, they passed two young women. "They should both be riding the donkey," they heard one woman say to the other. "Isn't that what donkeys are for?" Not wanting to look foolish, the father pulled his son up on the donkey with him.
Upon rounding the next bend in the road, the encountered some more travelers. "Shame on you for overloading that poor donkey," one of them said. "It will be so exhausted, no one will buy it. You should be carrying it."
The father and son jumped off the donkey and looked for a way to carry it. The father spied a bamboo pole by the side of the road. He and his sone wrestled the surprised donkey to the ground and tied its hooves to the pole. With the donkey hanging upside-down between them, they continued to the market.
"How silly is that," laughed the people in the market as this strange group arrived. Prem laughed too, realizing that you can't please everyone.
